Multi-Engine Land Add-on

A Multi-Engine Land (MEL) add-on allows pilots with an existing Private or Commercial certificate to fly twin-engine aircraft, typically completed in 5–15 flight hours without a required written knowledge test. Training focuses on systems, aerodynamics, and emergency engine-out procedures (VFR/IFR), culminating in an oral exam and flight checkride.

• No Minimum Hours: There are no FAA-mandated minimum flight hours for the rating; training is to proficiency.

• Cost and Time: Programs often take 3-6 days, with costs ranging from $3,000 to $7,000+.

• Requirements: A current pilot certificate (Private or Commercial) and an instructor endorsement.

• Focus Areas: Engine-out procedures, Vmc

  MC demonstrations, rapid decision-making, and complex aircraft systems (constant speed propellers, retractable landing gear).

• Check-ride: An oral exam and a practical test, with no separate written knowledge test.
